Sustainability at The Shores

At The Shores on Lake Ida, caring for the environment isn’t a trend for us—it’s part of how we operate every single day. From the shoreline to our cabins, we’re always looking for thoughtful ways to reduce our impact, protect the lake, and create a space that feels as natural and beautiful as it should!

Rooted in the Land

Spring is one of our favorite times of year because it gives us the opportunity to reinvest in the property in meaningful ways. Our landscaping choices go beyond aesthetics—we intentionally have planted native grasses and seasonal flowers that support pollinators, improve soil health, and help reduce runoff from our ditches into our surrounding wetlands and lake.

Along the shoreline, we focus on maintaining a more natural buffer whenever possible. This helps protect water quality and preserves the ecosystem that makes Lake Ida so special.

One of the ways we reduce waste behind the scenes is through composting. We collect organic materials like shoreline weeds and fish waste from our fish cleaning house and turn them into nutrient-rich soil that can be reused right here on the property. It’s a full-circle approach—what comes from the land goes back into it. In fact, we have used this compost around cabins that needed fresh grass seed and also in our raised vegetable beds. Not only does this reduce landfill waste, but it also helps us nourish the very spaces our guests, and us, enjoy all season long! Also, how neat to be using our own compost to grow veggies for our family?!

Thoughtful Choices Inside Our Cabins

Sustainability doesn’t stop outdoors. Inside our cabins, we’ve made small but meaningful changes to reduce waste and create a healthier environment for our guests. We use non-toxic cleaning products whenever possible—keeping spaces fresh without the harsh chemicals. You’ll also find reusable soap dispensers instead of single-use plastics. It’s a simple switch, but one that significantly cut down on unnecessary waste over time.

We’re always looking for ways to be more mindful with our resources. From improving recycling accessibility around the property to encouraging responsible use of water and energy, we believe that small efforts—done consistently—add up. Even our approach to firewood is intentional. By sourcing locally, we help prevent the spread of invasive pests and protect the surrounding forests.

Beautiful perennials!

We believe that caring for this place is something we can all be part of. Whether it’s picking up after a day on the lake, respecting the shoreline, or simply being mindful during your stay, every small action helps preserve the experience for future guests.

Sustainability is not a one-time project—it’s something we’re always working on and improving. We’re proud of the steps we’ve taken so far, and we’re committed to continuing to find better, smarter ways to care for the land, the lake, and the community around us. Because at the end of the day, this isn’t just where we work—it’s a place we truly love and call home!
